Abstract

Pain during sex is a problem affecting many with endometriosis, a chronic endocrine and immunological disease affecting an estimated 89 million women and girls worldwide. Environmental toxins and other factors have been implicated in this modern epidemic. Approximately 60 percent of women with endometriosis report pain with sex, sometimes cyclical; sometimes ongoing, which can occur with all types of sexual activity, not only intercourse. Delayed diagnosis greatly increases suffering and lack of understanding from partners and families. Open communications, determining the least painful time during the menstrual cycle, exploring forms of intimacy other than deep penetration, and utilizing alternative positions can be helpful.
