This atlas introduction describes clear cell carcinoma (CCC) of the ovary as a distinct clinical and pathological ovarian cancer subtype, noting that earlier reports were often limited to small case numbers. It explains that the Japan Gynecologic Oncology Group conducted an international clinical trial that collected 652 CCC cases and performed central pathological review, and that the atlas documents both typical and unusual pathological features identified through that review. A key limitation is that the work is organized around the trial’s central review dataset and focuses on pathology description rather than broader biologic mechanisms or outcomes. Relevance to endometriosis: endometriosis is cited in the referenced literature within this chapter’s background (e.g., as a known link to ovarian cancer subtype risk and as context for clear cell ovarian cancer arising from endometriosis), though the chapter’s main focus is introducing the atlas based on central pathological review.

Abstract

Clear cell carcinoma (CCC) of the ovary has clinical and pathological features distinct from those of other ovarian carcinomas. Most reports of CCC in the literature consist of relatively small numbers of cases. Recently, an international clinical trial for CCC was conducted by the Japan Gynecologic Oncology Group (JGOG) and 652 cases were collected and underwent central pathological review. This Atlas represents the results of that review, and comprises both typical and unusual pathological features.
