Serum levels of androgens and prostate-specific antigen in endometriosis

This prospective case-control study compared advanced (Stage III/IV) endometriosis patients with controls by measuring basal serum levels of total and free testosterone, androstenedione, DHEA, DHEA-S, and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in the early follicular phase of the menstrual cycle. The authors found that mean levels of multiple androgens (T, fT, A, DHEA, DHEA-S) were higher in the endometriosis group, but these differences were not statistically significant, and PSA levels were also similar between groups (0.0074 ± 0.0120 ng/ml vs 0.0059 ± 0.0056 ng/ml; p = 0.58). The main caveat explicitly reflected in the findings is the lack of statistical significance for all reported group differences, limiting evidence for a meaningful separation between groups.
