Der Kapiteltext untersucht den chronischen Unterbauchschmerz der Frau als unscharf definiertes, historisch unterschiedlich beschriebenes Symptomfeld, wobei wegen fehlender internationaler Standarddefinition keine belastbare Prävalenz für die Gesamtbevölkerung ableitbar ist; zugleich wird angenommen, dass die tatsächliche Häufigkeit höher ist als in bisherigen Studien gezeigt. Er stellt heraus, dass praktisch alle Beckenpathologien als Differenzial- oder zumindest verstärkende Begleitdiagnosen in Frage kommen und gibt eine Übersicht möglicher Differenzialdiagnosen. Zusätzlich wird berichtet, dass psychosomatische Faktoren in vielen Studien nachweisbar eine Rolle spielen, weshalb zunehmend eine multimodale, biopsychosoziale Betrachtungsweise bevorzugt wird; als Limitation bzw. praktische Schwierigkeit wird genannt, dass Behandelnde mitunter zu wenig psychosomatische Kenntnisse haben und Patientinnen mit somatisch empfundenen Beschwerden schwer für einen psychosomatischen Zugang zu motivieren sein können. Relevanz für endometriosis/adenomyosis: Das Kapitel erwähnt endometriosis nicht explizit, wurde jedoch wegen einer thematischen Überschneidung mit chronischem Beckenschmerz (inkl. endometrioserelevanter Differenzialdiagnosen) in den Endometriose-/Adenomyose-Korpus aufgenommen.
