Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Ten percent of women present with moderate to severe mastalgia, and danazol achieves pain relief control with variable results. The objective of this study was to know the success of danazol to control moderate to severe mastalgia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A descriptive, open, transversal and retrospective study (January 2002 to March 2003) was done. Women with moderate to sever mastalgia were studied. Demographic issues, the association of mastalgia with menses, danazol dosage, collateral effects and effectivity of this drug were evaluated for all patients. RESULTS: Sixty-three patients were studied. Non-cyclic mastalgia occurred in 45 patients (71.4%). Collateral effects presented in 13 patients (20.6%); nausea and irregular menses were the most frequent. Mastalgia control was achieved in 50 patients (79.4%): for cyclic mastalgia 77.7% and for non-cyclic mastalgia 80% (p NS). CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that danazol is a useful drug to control moderate to severe mastalgia.
