The role of serum IL-6 changes in evaluation of endometriosis

This study evaluated whether serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels correlate with the severity of endometriosis in 51 women with endometriosis (20 newly diagnosed and 31 treated with danazol or zoladex) and 33 healthy controls, measuring IL-6 by ELISA in samples collected from November 2011 to January 2012. IL-6 levels were generally higher in endometriosis, but the results reported that IL-6 serum levels were significantly decreased in stage IV disease and were also affected by danazol/zoladex treatment, remaining low even among treated patients. The authors concluded that serum IL-6 testing was highly specific but had low sensitivity, and they presented it as a potential early detection marker.
