Abstract

Deep infiltrating endometriosis is not fully taken into account by the currently most widely used classification system of endometriosis, the revised American Society for Reproductive Medicine (rASRM) score, and rASRM stages correlate only poorly with presence and severity of different pain symptoms. Therefore, the ENZIAN classification was developed in addition to the rASRM score. Infiltration of certain ENZIAN compartments by endometriotic tissue was found to be associated with the presence of different pain symptoms and lesion size in specific ENZIAN compartments correlated with symptom severity. Accurate staging of endometriosis, especially deep infiltrating endometriosis, appears to be facilitated with the additional use of the revised ENZIAN score.
