The Role of Matrix Metalloproteinase9 (MMP9) in Endometriosis
This study found that higher expression of MMP-9 is significantly associated with higher stages of endometriosis in women undergoing laparoscopic surgery.

This observational cross-sectional study investigated MMP-9 expression in endometriosis patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery at hospitals in Makassar between October 2015 and March 2016, analyzing 50 histopathology samples by immunohistochemistry. MMP-9 expression was compared across endometriosis stages using Mann–Whitney and chi-square tests. The authors found significantly higher MMP-9 expression in more advanced disease, with mean expression ranks of 16.68 for stages I–II versus 27.99 for stages III–IV (p=0.013), and a greater proportion of positive higher-grade expression in stages III–IV (p=0.043). This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it assesses how MMP-9 expression varies with endometriosis stage.
