The paper reports three cases of umbilical endometriosis, a rare form of cutaneous endometriosis, describing patients who presented with an umbilical mass associated with pain, swelling, and hemorrhage that began immediately before menstruation and lasted through the menstrual period. The authors state that all three patients were diagnosed as umbilical endometriosis at the first visit, and that surgical enucleation of the tumor including normal surrounding tissue was performed, with histology confirming the diagnosis in every case. As a caveat, the report is limited to these three cases and does not provide broader study methods or outcome comparisons beyond diagnostic confirmation. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — specifically umbilical cutaneous endometriosis presenting with cyclical symptoms.

Abstract

Recent experience with 3 cases of umbilical endometriosis which is a very rare type of cutaneous endometriosis is described, together with 42 cases seen in the Japanese literature. Three patients, 43-, 42-, and 37-year-old women, were seen at the hospital because of an umbilical tumor with a pain, swelling, and hemorrhage starting from immediately before menstruation and lasting during menstrual period. At the first visit all 3 patients were diagnosed as umbilical endometriosis. Enucleation of the tumor including normal parts was carried out. Histologically the diagnosis of umbilical endometriosis was confirmed in all cases. In the diagnosis of umbilical endometriosis, it is important to hear about menstrual symptoms in detail, entertaining a possible existence of this disease.
