URINARY STEROIDS AND VAGINAL SMEAR IN OVARIECTOMIZED WOMEN TREATED WITH CHORIONIC GONADOTROPHIN

The evidence on the direct extra-gonadal effects of various preparations of human chorionic gonadotrophin (CG) is contradictory. Obviously, the question can be settled only by the experimental administration of CG to gonadectomized subjects; other kinds of evidence must at best be regarded as circumstantial. Several reports on results obtained in such experiments have been published during the last few years; and to the best of our knowledge these are summarised in Table 1. We think that it would be desirable to gather some more facts of this kind, particularly as very far-reaching theoretical conclusions have already been based on what we feel to be rather scanty evidence.
