While laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis has fewer complications than laparotomy, delayed diagnosis and treatment of severe complications can lead to catastrophic patient outcomes, even with recognized hazards like inadvertent bowel injury.

This chapter reviews complications associated with laparoscopic surgery performed for endometriosis, contrasting them with complications historically reported for laparotomy. It discusses that while laparoscopic complications are reportedly fewer, their severity and delayed recognition can allow patients to become seriously ill before appropriate diagnosis and treatment, leading to severe outcomes. The chapter highlights inadvertent bowel injury as a known hazard and notes that when enterostomies are recognized promptly at laparotomy, they are typically repaired with minimal postoperative sequelae, although it implies that laparoscopic detection delays can be more consequential. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it focuses on complications and risks of laparoscopic surgery used in the treatment of endometriosis.

Abstract

Complications of laparoscopic surgery are in fact fewer than those reported for laparotomy [1], but their potential severity and the failure to diagnose them quickly and treat them effectively means that the patient can be severely ill before a diagnosis is made, with catastrophic results. Inadvertent bowel injury at laparotomy is regarded as a recognized hazard, particularly during adhesiolysis. Such enterostomies are usually immediately recognized and repaired with minimal postoperative sequelae. Preview Unable to display preview. Download preview PDF.
