Abstract

Endometriosis is the presence of functional endometrial tissue at sites outside of the uterus. It typically presents with pain or infertility and cases of endometriosis causing large bowel obstruction are extremely rare. We now present a rare case of a 39-year-old female who acutely developed complete large bowel obstruction secondary to an unknown mass in the pelvis. The patient underwent exploratory laparotomy and the mass was found to be extrinsically compressing the rectosigmoid colon. The mass was resected en bloc and the pathologic report revealed benign findings consistent with endometriosis with colonic involvement. We review her case and examine the literature.
