Histamine metabolism disorder in pathogenesis of chronic pelvic pain in patients with external genital endometriosis
This study found a direct correlation between the intensity of pelvic pain and elevated histamine levels in the peripheral blood of patients with external genital endometriosis.

The paper studied histamine metabolism in relation to chronic pelvic pain in 100 women with external genital endometriosis, measuring serum histamine concentrations by a high-sensitivity ELISA and assessing pain intensity by VAS, quality of life with EHR-30, and anxiety with the Spielberger–Khanin questionnaire. The authors found statistically significant elevations in histamine in patients with high pain intensity, and reported that in these cases all patients had high situational and personal anxiety compared with a smaller proportion in the control group, along with depression in 58.3% of women with chronic pelvic pain (concentrated in those with higher VAS pain). They concluded that histamine levels in peripheral blood directly tracked pain intensity, while also describing markedly worsened quality of life and frequent affective symptoms. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — specifically external genital endometriosis with chronic pelvic pain and altered histamine metabolism.
