Abstract

Endometriosis is a disease which afflicts women of reproductive age. It is one of the most common causes of pelvic pain and infertility; an estimated 5 million women in the U.S. are affected.1 Despite its apparent widespread occurrence, there are no national or international surveillance systems to determine how many suffer from this disease. Since there is no noninvasive test that is highly selective and specific for endometriosis, studies of its prevalence and incidence have been limited to women undergoing gynecologic operations.
