Abstract

Many disorders can lead to subfertility. The most common causes of subfertility are ovulatory disorders, tubal disease and semen abnormalities, each accounting for the source of subfertility in approximately 25% of the couples. The diagnosis of unexplained subfertility is made when the couple has tried to conceive for at least one year without success despite evidence of ovulation, tubal patency and normal semen parameters. Evidence-based clinical practice guidelines for treatment of subfertility were retrieved from the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE), Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (ACOG), and the WHO. This chapter explains what is the effectiveness of ovarian stimulation against other treatment options in couples with unexplained subfertility. The use of laparoscopy in couples with unexplained subfertility is still a subject of debate, although it is generally accepted as the gold standard in diagnosing tubal pathology and other intra-abdominal causes of infertility.
