This paper reports an unusual case of late recurrence of uterine endometrioid carcinoma in the upper urinary tract, occurring 11 years after a hysterectomy for uterine corpus cancer. A 72-year-old woman presented with left ureteral cancer and underwent nephroureterectomy, and histology showed endometrioid carcinoma in the urinary tract that was similar to the original uterine tumor. The authors discuss a possible pathogenesis for how the recurrence occurred, noting the case-report nature as the main limitation (there is no broader study or systematic evidence). This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it references urinary tract endometriosis as a related context for an endometrioid carcinoma case, linking the report to endometriosis-associated mechanisms in the urinary tract.

Abstract

We will present an unusual case of endometrioid carcinoma that recurred in the upper urinary tract, showing an intraluminal spread, 11 years after hysterectomy for uterine corpus cancer. The case is a 72-year-old female who was referred to us for treatment of left ureteral cancer, at first. Nephroureterectomy was performed and histological examination showed endometrioid carcinoma similar to that resected 11 years earlier. A possible pathogenesis of this case will be discussed.
