The paper examines danazol treatment for women with mammary dysplasia, motivated by an observation that patients taking danazol for endometriosis often reported relief of breast pain, nodularity, and premenstrual engorgement. Women with suspected fibrocystic breast disease underwent xerommamography to exclude cancer given the rising incidence with age, and received danazol at 100–400 mg/day for 3–6 months depending on severity. The authors report that over 75% of patients experienced marked improvement or elimination of nodularity and engorgement, with some avoiding surgery, and in cases needing surgery danazol was used to identify a dominant, biopsy-eligible nodule that did not respond to therapy. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it is based on an unexpected symptom improvement in women treated for endometriosis that prompted the study of danazol in mammary dysplasia.
