This chapter reviews how ultrasound can monitor cyclical changes in the uterus, ovaries, and blood vessels during the normal menstrual cycle, building on earlier experience using ultrasound in patients receiving hormonal therapy. It reports that ovarian follicles can be visualized, measured, and followed for growth in both hormonal-therapy settings and women with normal cycles, with multiple later studies confirming these observations. A key limitation explicitly noted is that sonography can demonstrate pelvic organs and blood vessels but not the fallopian tubes, constraining what aspects of pelvic anatomy can be evaluated. Relevance to endometriosis: the paper does not explicitly discuss endometriosis or adenomyosis; it was included in the corpus via a keyword match in the upstream search index.

Abstract

Based on its ability to demonstrate the pelvic organs (Kratochwil etal. 1972; see Chap. 3), sonography can be utilized to monitor the changes that occur in the uterus, ovaries, and blood vessels (but not the fallopian tubes) during the normal menstrual cycle. Our earlier experience in patients undergoing hormonal therapy (Hackeloer and Hansmann 1976; Hackeloer et al. 1977) indicated that it was possible to demonstrate ovarian follicles, measure their size, and monitor their growth by ultrasound. These results were later confirmed (Hackeloer and Robinson 1978; Hackeloer etal. 1979; Hackeloer and Nitschke-Dabelstein 1980) in women with normal menstrual cycles.
