Abstract
Endometriosis has been well described and known for over 50 years, yet our current knowledge of its pathogenesis, the pathophysiology of related infertility, and spontaneous evolution is still unclear. Current treatments for endometriosis, including surgery and medical treatment, are neither curative nor without side effects. Medical treatment (i.e. hormonal treatment) affects the menstrual cycle and compromises fertility potential. Side effects that are caused by the hypoestrogenic condition associated with medical treatment can be annoying and unhealthy (vasomotor flushes, vaginal dryness, osteoporosis, etc.). These circumstances call for further research in endometriosis and for the development of new treatment and diagnostic tools.
