[Diagnostic value of uterine cavity fluid collection in the detection of pre-neoplastic lesions and endometrial carcinoma in the asymptomatic post-menopausal women].

UNLABELLED: Objective of the study was to assess the correlation between the presence of small fluid volume in uterine cavity and the pathological changes of endrometrium in the asymptomatic postmenopausal women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study covered 36 postmenopausal women, aged 54-72 years (mean age 64.7 years), with the uterine cavity fluid diagnosed during the prophylactic ultrasonography; all of them had the negative history of both postmenopausal bleeding and hormonal replacement therapy. In all cases D&C and/or hysteroscopy were performed. RESULTS: In 35 patients the uterine cavity fluid volume was assessed as 0.4-4.6 cm3, mean volume 2.3 cm3, and the endometrial thickness as 0.8-3.2 mm, mean 1.6 mm. In that group of patients no preneoplastic lesions nor endometrial carcinoma was detected. In one case of confirmed endometrial adenocarcinoma the uterine cavity fluid volume was 12.6 cm3 and the endometrial thickness was 8.4 mm. CONCLUSIONS: 1. Small volume of uterine cavity fluid as an isolated symptom in the asymptomatic postmenopausal women has no connection either with the pre-neoplastic lesions or endometrial carcinoma. 2. It is necessary to evaluate the need of the invasive diagnostic procedures in the asymptomatic postmenopausal women with small volume of uterine cavity fluid.
