The study investigated whether the chorionic allantoic membrane (CAM) model can reproduce endometrial angiogenesis relevant to implantation, by quantifying vessel surface index (GFI) and vessel density index (GDI) over time in endometrium from patients with versus without endometriosis. Endometrial tissue from 10 patients per group was transplanted onto the CAM, with six specimens per patient cultured for 24, 48, 72, or 96 hours, followed by computer-assisted assessment of vessel surface area and density. Both GFI and GDI increased significantly over time in endometrium from both groups and in native CAM, but there were no differences between patients with and without endometriosis; both groups differed significantly from native CAM (p<0.001). The paper concludes that CAM angiogenesis assessment is independent of measurement method and that angiogenesis supports implantation, but is not the factor that differentiates endometriosis status. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it compares endometrial angiogenesis (GFI/GDI) in patients with and without endometriosis using the CAM implantation model.
