Changes in Peripheral Blood as Manifestation of Disorders in the Mononuclear Phagocyte and Platelet System in Endometriosis
Endometriosis is characterized by altered peripheral blood monocyte and platelet counts, with ovarian endometriosis showing the highest platelet levels, and these changes may aid in preoperative diagnosis.

The study retrospectively compared complete blood count parameters focused on platelets and monocytes in 115 patients with endometriosis of different localizations versus 28 patients with functional ovarian cysts (yellow body and follicular), assessing values before and after radical surgery and accounting for concomitant gynecologic pathology. Platelet counts were not above the normal upper limit in either group, but thrombocytopenia (below normal) was significantly more common in the endometriosis groups, with the highest platelet values observed in ovarian endometriosis; adenomyosis was listed as next, followed by pelvic peritoneal and then cutaneous scar endometriosis. Monocyte counts were significantly higher when concomitant gynecologic diseases were present among endometriosis patients, and a moderate positive correlation between platelets and monocytes was reported prior to surgery (R = 0.42; p < 0.05); after radical surgery, platelet counts did not differ between groups. Relevance to endometriosis: This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it analyzes peripheral blood changes in mononuclear phagocyte (monocytes) and platelet systems across endometriosis forms and also mentions adenomyosis among the studied localizations.
