This study investigated whether serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 levels were associated with the severity of chronic pelvic pain in 90 women aged 20–41 with ovarian endometriosis, comparing those with endometrioma plus chronic pelvic inflammatory disease (n=44) versus isolated endometrioma (n=46) and a relatively healthy control group (n=30). Vitamin D status was measured by mass spectrometry, and laparoscopy was used to identify objective signs of external genital endometriosis, while pain severity was stratified by VAS. The combination of ovarian endometriosis with pelvic inflammatory disease was associated with a higher frequency of vitamin D deficiency and a higher share of severe pelvic pain, and the study found a significantly moderate inverse correlation between external genital endometriosis manifestations and serum vitamin D level; it also notes that age differed between groups, with patients in the combined group being older. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it examines how vitamin D status relates to pain severity in women with ovarian endometriosis complicated by pelvic inflammatory disease and external genital endometriosis findings.
