Adrenal Rest
Synonyms
Adrenocortical remnants.
Definition
Small discrete microscopic nodules of adrenal cortical cells.
Clinical Features
-
Incidence
Adrenocortical rest have been identified in 23% of carefully sectioned broad ligaments and collections of Hilus cells are occasionally encountered (Falls 1955).
-
Site
Broad ligament or mesosalpinx.
Clinical Presentation
They are most commonly an incidental finding (Adashi et al. 1980).
-
Treatment
None.
-
Outcome
Benign accessory tissue (Sasano et al. 1997).
Macroscopy
Grossly, they appear as small microscopic, yellow nodules, but they may be obscured by fat (Roth et al. 1996).
Microscopy
Histologically all three cortical layers are recognizable. These remnants may become hypertrophic secondary to adrenal destruction or may, rarely, give rise to a functional or nonfunctional cortical adenoma (Wild et al. 1988).
Molecular Features
Not clinically relevant.
Endometriosis
Definition
The presence of ectopically located endometrial tissue involving...
