Postoperative Assessment of the Quality of Life in Patients with Colorectal Endometriosis
This study validated the SF-36 questionnaire for colorectal endometriosis patients, finding it reliable and demonstrating significant postoperative improvements in physical and emotional functioning and reduced pain.

This retrospective analysis of prospectively recorded CIRENDO cohort data evaluated the validity and reliability of the 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36) in 488 women with histologically confirmed colorectal deep endometriosis (rectum or sigmoid), comparing patient-reported health-related quality of life and symptom measures before surgery and at one year postoperatively. Using SF-36 internal consistency metrics (item-scale correlation and Cronbach’s α), construct validity with pain intensity via visual analog scale (VAS) for dysmenorrhea and dyspareunia (with and without pain relief medication), and paired comparisons of SF-36, KESS (constipation symptoms), and GIQLI (gastrointestinal dysfunction), the study found significant postoperative improvements across SF-36 domains and summary scores, with Cronbach’s α >0.7 for all domains and scaling success rates >98% pre-op and >99% in most domains post-op. Dysmenorrhea and dyspareunia VAS scores decreased significantly, while correlations between SF-36 domains and pain measures were negative pre- and postoperatively, and KESS/GIQLI scores also improved. A key limitation explicitly implied by the design is that these are postoperative outcomes at a single one-year follow-up point in a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data without a non-surgical control group. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — specifically postoperative health-related quality of life assessment in women with colorectal deep endometriosis.
