Abstract

Abstract The Himalayan ranges, with their towering peaks and vital ecological significance, are integral to the global climate system. The Sikkim Himalayan region, in particular, is home to numerous glaciers that are crucial for regional hydrology and climate regulation. Understanding the melting patterns and retreat of these glaciers is essential for predicting and mitigating the impacts of climate change. The rapid expansion of glacial lakes, such as South Lhonak Lake, highlights the growing urgency of this issue. These glacial lake outburst Floods (GLOFs) pose significant threats to downstream communities, infrastructure, and ecosystems, underscoring the need for comprehensive monitoring and robust mitigation strategies. In October 2023, a catastrophic GLOF event from South Lhonak Lake triggered a massive surge in the Teesta River, causing widespread devastation across Sikkim, emphasizing the region's heightened vulnerability.
