In this study, cassava stem-derived activated carbon was used to remove Mn(II) from aqueous solution. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with Box- Behnken design (BBD) was applied to optimize adsorption parameters which include initial Mn(II) ion concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage, and temperature, for adsorption capacity (response). Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to evaluate the significance of these parameters. The optimum conditions were identified as initial Mn(II) ion concentration of 3999.70 mg/L, pH of 9.00, adsorbent dosage of 0.47 g/L and temperature of 45 0 C, with desirability of 0.702 resulting in adsorption capacity of the activated carbon for Mn(II) ion of 584.846 mg/g. The Langmuir monolayer adsorption capacity (555.56 mg/g) obtained in this study is a very high value highlighting the potential of cassava stem-crude potash derived activated carbon as an effective adsorbent for environmental applications to remove contaminants [Mn(II) ion]. Among all substances occupying the surface of the earth, the percentage of water is about 70%. Besides air, used by humans and animals for respiration, water is one of the most important substances of great importance to mankind. In spite of the fact that water covers 70% of the surface of the earth, the percentage of fresh water is only about 2.5% of the entire volume of water on earth, with the remaining 67.5% made up of salt water [ 1 ]. The World Water Council (WWC) in 2005 reported that just 0.3% of the 2.5% fresh water is in the form of surface water [ 2 ]. On the other hand, groundwater contributes to only 0.6% of the earth total water resources and it is considered as the main and most preferred drinking source of water in rural and some urban communities in developing countries [ 3 ]. This is a strong indication that the amount of freshwater available for mankind to depend on is relatively small. Despite this, some parts of the world faces challenges with the water they drink and use for other purposes. Due to contamination, the quality of this relatively small number of freshwater resources left for human dependence is rapidly deteriorating. As a result of the rapid growth of the world population, civilisation, domestic activities, industrialisation, agricultural activities, atomic explosions and other global and environmental changes, water contamination is continuously rising daily. Of late, water contamination is a very serious problem for all living organisms and commercial activities of humans involving the use of water [ 4 ]. Manganese (Mn 2+ ) in groundwater has been noted as a serious problem across the globe [ 5 ]. According to World Health Organisation (WHO), manganese is classified as one of the contaminants of water for human consumption together with arsenic and iron and these heavy metals presence in water has led to increasing cases of health problems [ 6 ]. High concentrations of manganese in groundwater is found across parts of the world [ 7 ]. Manganese is distributed widely in the geological environment and usually deposited into groundwater through slow dissolution of manganse-containing rocks [ 8 , 9 ]. Hence groundwater is one of the main source of manganese ingestion in humans. Besides the natural geological sources of manganese pollution in groundwater, industrial and agricultural activities are also contributing to manganese contamination to a large extent [ 10 ]. Manganese is however beneficial in drinking water at levels of about 0.5 mg/L but can be detrimental on human biolological, neurological and physiological systems once it exceeds this acceptable limit, 0.5 mg/L of the World Health Organisation (WHO) [ 11 ]. Several techniques have been developed for water and wastewater treatment for removal of contaminants [Mn(II) ion] from drinking water [ 12 – 15 ]. The commonly applied methods include ion exchange, reverse osmosis, oxidation, evaporation, coagulation, chemical precipitation, solvent extraction, distillation, electrolysis, sedimentation, crystallization, ion exchange and adsorption [ 16 ]. Among the methods, the application of adsorption for water treatment is popular because of its simplicity and ease of operation [ 17 – 19 ]. The present study aims to investigate the efficacy of cassava stem-derived activated carbon to remove Mn(II) ion from aqueous solution. Additionally, it seeks to optimize key process parameters, including initial Mn(II) ion concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage, and temperature using response surface methodology. The results will demonstrate the efficiency of cassava stem-derived activated carbon in removing contaminants [Mn(II)] from drinking and wastewater. This approach offers affordable cost in obtaining activated carbon for societal benefits in developing sustainable technologies for pollution control and resource recovery. 2.0 Materials and methods 2.1 Materials Cassava stems, the primary raw material for the synthesis were obtained from an agricultural farm from Bole in the Savannah Region of northern Ghana. Crude potash, the material used as an inexpensive activating agent, was obtained from Bekwai in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. All other chemicals and reagents were of analytical grade. Distilled water was used to prepare solutions. 2.2 Adsorbent preparation The impregnation of the biomass precursor was carried out by mixing about 20 g of the powdered cassava stem with crude potash in a beaker, varying the impregnation ratio (activating agent/biomass precursor) from 0.5 to 2.0. Thereafter, 100 mL of distilled water was added, and the resulting mixture was continuously stirred at room temperature for 24 h to achieve homogeneity. The resulting mixture was oven-dried at a temperature of 105 0 C for 24 h. The simultaneous carbonization and activation of the impregnated precursor was carried out from 600 to 900 ℃ and activation times ranged from 0.5 to 2 h at a heating rate of 25 ℃/min in a muffle furnace. The resulting material was cooled down in a desiccator and washed with distilled water and 0.1 M HCl until the pH of the washed solution was approximately 7. It was dried in an oven at 105 ℃ for 24 h, allowed to cool in a desiccator and kept in an air-tight container. 2.3 Standard Mn(II) solution 1000 mg/L Mn(II) stock solution was prepared by dissolving 3.1393 g of Manganese sulphate monohydrate (MnSO 4 .H 2 O) in 250 mL of distilled water and the obtained solution was diluted to 1,000 mL mark of volumetric flask using distilled water. Working concentrations were prepared from the stock solution by diluting the stock solution with distilled water to the required concentrations. Concentrations prior as well as subsequent adsorption were estimated using UV – Vis spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 525 nm. 2.4 Process optimization The Box-Behnken design (BBD) within the framework of response surface methodology (RSM) was employed for experimental design, optimization of process parameters as well as analyzing the interactions between the parameters, using Design Expert Software (version 8.0.6, STAT-EASE Inc., Minneapolis, USA) (Table 1 , Table 2 ). A BBD for the four variables with a total of 29 experiments as calculated from Eq. 1 [ 20 ]. N = 2K (K-1) + r = (2×4)(4 − 1) + 5 = 29 (1) Where N represent the total number of experiments, while K represents the number of parameters and r represents the replicate number of the central point. The experimental design matrix was carried out following the Box-Behnken experimental design (Table 2 ). The dependent variable (response), adsorption capacity was determined for the Mn(II) ion adsorption onto the activated carbon in each experiment. Response surface methodology (RSM) was then used to explore the relationships between the independent variables and the response. The experimental conditions were generated using Design Expert Software. The activated carbon was evaluated for its adsorption capacity for Mn(II) in this study. 3.1 Adsorption capacity The adsorption capacity is an important characteristic that gives activated carbon’s potential as an efficient adsorbent. Figure 1 . shows the interaction between pH and adsorbent dosage with adsorption capacity as a response. The adsorption capacity of the activated carbon for Mn(II) removal decreased with corresponding increase in adsorbent dosage from 0.1 to 1.2 g/L. Even though, increase in adsorbent dosage could be attributed to increase in adsorption sites and surface area, the values of Mn(II) removal decreased with increased adsorbent dosage [ 21 ]. This could be attributed to the fact that during the adsorption reaction, the adsorption sites remained unsaturated whereas the number of available sites for the adsorption increased by increasing the dosage of the adsorbent [ 22 ]. Another reason for the decreased in the Mn(II) removal at high concentration of the adsorbent, could be due to agglomeration of the adsorption sites of the activated carbon. Hence the Mn(II) high adsorptions onto the surface of the activated carbon were obtained due to the simultaneous decrease in adsorbent dosage and increase in pH. This could be due to increase in availability of the adsorption sites of the activated carbon at a higher pH leading to corresponding increase in the availability of Mn(II) to the adsorption sites of the activated carbon [ 23 ]. Figure 2 . demonstrates the 3D response surface of the combined effect of pH and temperature on Mn (II) removal onto the surface of the activated carbon. Increasing the temperature of the aqueous solution in a lower pH had a significant effect on the Mn(II) removal. As the temperature increased, Mn(II) adsorption from the solution also increased and this might be due to the faster rate of chemical precipitation of the manganese(II) hydroxide [Mn(OH) 2 ] at higher temperatures [ 24 ]. Figure 3 . shows 3D surface plot of the effect of pH and initial Mn(II) ion concentration on the Mn(II) ion removal. The Mn(II) removal increased with increased in the initial Mn(II) ion concentration, varying from 200 to 4000 mg/L and again increased with corresponding increase in the solution pH varied from 3 to 9. The pH of the solution affected both the adsorption sites of the activated carbon and the chemistry of the Mn(II) in solution. Generally, the amount of adsorbate adsorbed is influenced by the adsorbent surface properties. Hence an increase in the Mn(II) ion removal by increasing the initial Mn(II) concentration in this study might be due to an increase in the driving force of the Mn(II) concentration gradient [ 25 ] . Figure 4 . shows the combined effect of adsorbent dosage and temperature on adsorption of Mn(II) ion from solution. The obtained results showed that Mn(II) removal decreased with increased in the dosage of the adsorbent from 0.1 to 1.2 g/L. Hence the effect of the dosage of the activated carbon was more significant than the temperature. Figure 5 . indicates the 3D surface plot of the effect of temperature and initial Mn(II) ion concentration on the removal of Mn(II) ion from solution. The effect of the initial Mn(II) concentration was observed to be more significant compared to the temperature and finally Fig. 6 . demonstrates Mn(II) adsorption as a function of the activated carbon dosage and the initial Mn(II) ion concentration. 3.2 Regression model representation Box-Behnken design (BBD) of response surface methodology (RSM) was used to develop a second-order polynomial regression equation to analyze the variable interactions and to identify the significant variables' contribution to the regression model. The design, combined with the response values from the experiments are shown in Table 2 . According to the proposition of the software, the adsorption capacity was utilized in the quadratic model. Eq. (2) showed the final empirical model in terms of coded factors for adsorption capacity (Y). Their coded factors A, B, C and D were earlier indicated. The signs in front of the terms, the positive sign and the negative sign indicate synergistic effect and antagonistic effect respectively [ 26 ]. Adsorption capacity (Y) = 220.12 + 168.68A – 3.29B – 396.10C + 12.31D – 2.11AB – 235.23AC + 19.10AD – 0.010BC + 0.12BD – 4.24CD – 122.54A 2 + 8.35B 2 + 320.24C 2 + 41.80D 2 (2) The conformation evaluation of the model equation was done using the correlation coefficient ( R 2 ). The value of R 2 closer to unity indicated the suitability of the model equation. The R 2 value for the developed model for Eq. (2) was 0.9590. The R 2 value of adsorption capacity (response) was relatively high, an indication of good agreement between the experimental data and the prediction of the model. 3.3 Statistical analysis of variance (ANOVA) To define the significance and fitness of the model, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) through BBD was carried out as indicated in Table 3 . The ANOVA was analyzed to validate the adequacy of the model. The adsorption capacity quadratic model ANOVA is shown in Table 3 and Table 4 , which gave F-value of 23.40 and Prob > F value of 0.0001. The model terms with values of Prob > F less than 0.05 signified that the model terms were significant. It is very important to check the adequacy of the model as part of the data analysis because if the fit is inadequate, it would lead to misleading or poor results [ 27 ]. In this study, initial Mn(II) ion concentration (A) and adsorbent dosage (C) were the two significant model terms and the model term which had the most significant impact on the response was C (adsorbent dosage) with F-value of 184.38. A minimal deviation of points from the line of best fit of the graph in Fig. 7 showed that the value of prediction interacted well with the actual values, hence the interaction of the four variables could be represented significantly with the model equation of the response surface. Further explanation is provided from the plot of normal percentage probability presented in Fig. 8 . 3.5 Process of optimization The desirability function was applied by using Design Expert Software Version, 8.0.6 (Stat-Ease) where the software selected the experimental conditions with maximum desirability. The maximum experimental conditions for the adsorption of Mn(II) from solution by the activated carbon were; A-initial Mn(II) ion concentration = 3999.70 mg/L, B-pH = 9.00, C-adsorbent dosage = 0.47 g/L and D-temperature = 45 0 C with desirability of 0.702 after seeking 41 solutions as shown in Table 5 and Fig. 9 , to optimize these operating conditions for Mn(II) adsorption onto the activated carbon. The adsorption capacity under these experimental conditions was Y-adsorption capacity = 584.846 mg/g. Higher adsorption capacity of activated carbon is usually attributed to the availability of micropores structures and to the great approximation of the activated carbon to possess a large surface area because of the enlargement of its structures [ 28 ]. The R 2 values of Langmuir and Freundlich models were 0.9931 and 0.9881, respectively for the cassava stem-crude potash activated carbon. The R 2 values indicates goodness-of-fit of experimental results on isotherm models. The higher R 2 value of Langmuir isotherm model showed its fitness to the equilibrium data than the Freundlich model. This fitness of the Langmuir model could be an indication of monolayer adsorption by the cassava stem-crude potash activated carbon. The monolayer adsorption capacity of the cassava stem-derived activated carbon (555.56 mg/g) obtained in this study is a very large value compared to the values obtained by other researchers. The value obtained is very high compared to those reported by Niksirat et al. and Rachel et al., who used activated carbons to remove Mn(II) from solution and obtained a maximum monolayer adsorption capacities of 120.00 and 149.43 mg/g [ 29 , 30 ]. Again, the monolayer adsorption capacity (555.56 mg/g) recorded by the activated carbon, is closed to the optimum adsorption capacity (584.846 mg/g) of desirability ramp of the activated carbon using Design Expert Software Version, 8.0.6 (Stat-Ease) as indicated in Fig. 9 . 4. Conclusion The Box-Behnken design (BBD) of the response surface methodology (RSM) statistical technique was used to optimize the process conditions, to remove Mn(II) ion from aqueous solution onto activated carbon. The effects of the input parameters, initial Mn(II) ion concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage, and temperature on the property of the activated carbon was investigated using analysis of variance (ANOVA), to predict the significant variables. The experimental data of the adsorption capacity was found to satisfactorily agree with the model predictions. The optimum conditions for adsorbing Mn(II) onto the activated carbon were determined to be initial Mn(II) ion concentration of 3999.70 mg/L, pH of 9.00, adsorbent dosage of 0.47 g/L and temperature of 45 0 C. Under these conditions, the activated carbon recorded adsorption capacity of 584.846 mg/g, and a monolayer adsorption capacity of 555.56 mg/g based on Langmuir isotherm model. The proximity of these two adsorption capacity values indicates the success of this study in determining that the cassava stem-derived activated carbon has a very high adsorption capacity in removing Mn(II) ions from aqueous solution. Moreover, the monolayer adsorption capacity obtained is very high compared to those reported in literature using activated carbons prepared from other precursors in removing Mn(II) ions from solutions. From literature, maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 120.00 and 149.43 mg/g were reported by Niksirat et al. and Rachel et al., respectively. These findings suggest that the prepared activated carbon has the potential to serve as a cost-effective and efficient alternative to commercial carbons, with promising applications in areas such as water purification, gas adsorption, and environmental remediation. adsorption capacity

1.0 Introduction

Water is an important natural resource of this universe and performs a significant role in the proper functioning of sustaining life and the environment. Among all substances occupying the surface of the earth, the percentage of water is about 70%. Besides air, used by humans and animals for respiration, water is one of the most important substances of great importance to mankind. In spite of the fact that water covers 70% of the surface of the earth, the percentage of fresh water is only about 2.5% of the entire volume of water on earth, with the remaining 67.5% made up of salt water [1]. The World Water Council (WWC) in 2005 reported that just 0.3% of the 2.5% fresh water is in the form of surface water [2]. On the other hand, groundwater contributes to only 0.6% of the earth total water resources and it is considered as the main and most preferred drinking source of water in rural and some urban communities in developing countries [3]. Of late, water contamination is a very serious problem for all living organisms and commercial activities of humans involving the use of water [4].

Manganese (Mn2+) in groundwater has been noted as a serious problem across the globe [5]. According to World Health Organisation (WHO), manganese is classified as one of the contaminants of water for human consumption together with arsenic and iron and these heavy metals presence in water has led to increasing cases of health problems [6]. High concentrations of manganese in groundwater is found across parts of the world [7]. Manganese is distributed widely in the geological environment and usually deposited into groundwater through slow dissolution of manganse-containing rocks [8, 9]. Hence groundwater is one of the main source of manganese ingestion in humans. Besides the natural geological sources of manganese pollution in groundwater, industrial and agricultural activities are also contributing to manganese contamination to a large extent [10]. Manganese is however beneficial in drinking water at levels of about 0.5 mg/L but can be detrimental on human biolological, neurological and physiological systems once it exceeds this acceptable limit, 0.5 mg/L of the World Health Organisation (WHO) [11].

Several techniques have been developed for water and wastewater treatment for removal of contaminants [Mn(II) ion] from drinking water [12–15]. The commonly applied methods include ion exchange, reverse osmosis, oxidation, evaporation, coagulation, chemical precipitation, solvent extraction, distillation, electrolysis, sedimentation, crystallization, ion exchange and adsorption [16]. Among the methods, the application of adsorption for water treatment is popular because of its simplicity and ease of operation [17–19].

2.0 Materials and methods

2.1 Materials

Cassava stems, the primary raw material for the synthesis were obtained from an agricultural farm from Bole in the Savannah Region of northern Ghana. Figure 1. shows the interaction between pH and adsorbent dosage with adsorption capacity as a response.

The adsorption capacity of the activated carbon for Mn(II) removal decreased with corresponding increase in adsorbent dosage from 0.1 to 1.2 g/L. Even though, increase in adsorbent dosage could be attributed to increase in adsorption sites and surface area, the values of Mn(II) removal decreased with increased adsorbent dosage [21]. This could be attributed to the fact that during the adsorption reaction, the adsorption sites remained unsaturated whereas the number of available sites for the adsorption increased by increasing the dosage of the adsorbent [22].

This could be due to increase in availability of the adsorption sites of the activated carbon at a higher pH leading to corresponding increase in the availability of Mn(II) to the adsorption sites of the activated carbon [23].

Figure 2. demonstrates the 3D response surface of the combined effect of pH and temperature on Mn (II) removal onto the surface of the activated carbon. Increasing the temperature of the aqueous solution in a lower pH had a significant effect on the Mn(II) removal. As the temperature increased, Mn(II) adsorption from the solution also increased and this might be due to the faster rate of chemical precipitation of the manganese(II) hydroxide [Mn(OH)2] at higher temperatures [24].

Figure 3. shows 3D surface plot of the effect of pH and initial Mn(II) ion concentration on the Mn(II) ion removal. Hence an increase in the Mn(II) ion removal by increasing the initial Mn(II) concentration in this study might be due to an increase in the driving force of the Mn(II) concentration gradient [25] .

Figure 4. shows the combined effect of adsorbent dosage and temperature on adsorption of Mn(II) ion from solution. The obtained results showed that Mn(II) removal decreased with increased in the dosage of the adsorbent from 0.1 to 1.2 g/L.

The value obtained is very high compared to those reported by Niksirat et al. and Rachel et al., who used activated carbons to remove Mn(II) from solution and obtained a maximum monolayer adsorption capacities of 120.00 and 149.43 mg/g [29, 30]. 9.

4. Conclusion

The Box-Behnken design (BBD) of the response surface methodology (RSM) statistical technique was used to optimize the process conditions, to remove Mn(II) ion from aqueous solution onto activated carbon.

The optimum conditions for adsorbing Mn(II) onto the activated carbon were determined to be initial Mn(II) ion concentration of 3999.70 mg/L, pH of 9.00, adsorbent dosage of 0.47 g/L and temperature of 45 0C.

Declarations

Author Contribution

A.P(Alhassan Pont) gathered and analyzed the data, drafted, and prepared the manuscript for scientific clarity and coherence.
