Antibody Production Techniques and Antibody Types: Evolution, Methodologies, and Applications

Abstract

The generation of antibodies is a cornerstone of modern biomedical research, diagnostics, and therapy. This review provides an extensive overview of antibody production techniques, from classical polyclonal methods to cutting-edge recombinant and display technologies. It also discusses diverse antibody types, including natural immunoglobulin isotypes, monoclonal antibodies, engineered fragments such as single-chain variable fragments (scFv), nanobodies, and bispecific formats. Each antibody production technique is examined in terms of molecular principles, protocols, historical significance, advantages, limitations, and applications. The integration of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in antibody gene cloning and engineering has notably accelerated discovery and optimization. This combined analysis equips researchers with a technical and conceptual framework to select and implement antibody technologies tailored to research and clinical demands.
