Abstract

Introduction: Endometriosis is a gynecological pathology affecting approximately one in ten women of childbearing age. It has a significant diagnostic delay of about seven years. The pathophysiology is still poorly understood. There is a great heterogeneity in the symptomatology according to the women. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of life of women with endometriosis followed at the University Hospital of Caen. Material and method: This was a single-center prospective cohort study including women consulting or being hospitalized for endometriosis at the Caen University Hospital. Validated symptom and quality of life questionnaires such as the EQ-5D or the SF-36 were distributed to them. Results: Ten women participated in this study. Their quality of life scores were decreased. Nine out of ten women suffered from dysmenorrhea and diarrhea. Half of the participants also had urinary disorders. Most symptoms were exacerbated at the time of menstruation. Analgesics were effective in reducing pain (p<0.001). Finally, the spouses described an impact of the disease on their daily life. Sexuality and daily life were mainly affected (mean 5.3 and 5.8 respectively). Discussion: Women followed at the Caen University Hospital for endometriosis experience a decrease in their quality of life. Their symptoms are numerous (digestive, urinary, pain, etc.), mainly catamenial, and impact all aspects of their lives, including emotional, sexual, social and professional. Psychological disorders such as anxiety and depression are common in this population. Moreover, this disease also has consequences on the daily life of the spouses and on their couple in general. Progress in diagnosis, management and treatment is still needed.
