The purpose of the study was to find out the life satisfaction among senior citizens residing in old age homes of Devghat, Nepal. Methods: A cross sectional study design was conducted among 96 senior citizens residing in old age homes through total enumeration sampling techniques over a period of 4 weeks (4 th August 2022 - 4 th September 2022). Data was collected using Satisfaction with Life Scale through structured interview technique. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation. For inferential statistics chi square test was used at p=0.05 level of significance. Results: The study finding revealed that most of the senior citizens i.e. 52.1% were satisfied with their life. There were statistically significant association between the life satisfaction and communication with family members, help from others, life comparing to others, social activities and economic status at p value <0.05. Conclusion: This study concluded that most of the senior citizens were satisfied with their overall life scale and only a few were dissatisfied. Hence, this study suggested that efforts should be directed towards the enhancement of life satisfaction of senior citizens. Life satisfaction Old age homes Senior citizens BACKGROUND The Senior citizens Acts, 2063 in Nepal defines senior citizens as individuals who have reached the age of 60 years or above. 1 The elderly people are pride of the nation. Senior citizens are in fact a great asset of society and nation as they have precious knowledge, skill and experiences. They are rich in experience, knowledge and skills that can be useful for the younger generation to learn from them and continuity to the traditional skill. 2 The social security of senior citizen in Nepal is very weak. The country hardly run some old age homes in some areas and provides little money to the old age people for their subsistence. This is another serious issue which is to be identified and need to take action upon it. 3 Nepalese family type is being gradually changed to nuclear family. The population census showed the average household size decreased to 4.9 according to the population census 2021. This shows that there is certain attraction of Nepalese people to be a small family, namely spouse and their two children. 4 The senior citizens are either remained alone in village or they transfer towards old age home. This study aimed to find out the life satisfaction of senior citizens living in old age homes of Devghat, Nepal. METHODOLOGY Study design A cross sectional analytical study was conducted to find out the life satisfaction of the senior citizens residing in old age homes of Nepal. Study setting Old age homes of Devghat, Nepal Study Population Senior citizens living in old age homes of Devghat. Sampling Technique Total enumerative sampling technique. Sample size 96 Research Instruments Research instrument was developed based on the Satisfaction with life scale which was developed by the Diener et.al., used to assess the life satisfaction with the respondent’s life as a whole and the modified form of this tool which was used by the Adhikari RD. 6 Permission for the tool was taken from the concerned authority. Questionnaire had 2 parts Part – I: It consisted of questions related to socio-demographic and personal characteristics and health status such as age, gender, religion, ethnicity, marital status, educational status, occupation, types of family, duration of stay, source of income, health problems, types of treatment habits of alcohol drinking and smoking habits of senior citizens. Part – II: It consisted of questionns related to life satisfaction of senior citizens and the present living situation. Part-III: It consisted of questions related to overall life satisfaction of senior citizens. The instrument included 24 items in which 13 items are related to satisfaction level and 11 items are related to life satisfaction in which highly satisfied gets 5 points, satisfied gets 4 points, neither satisfied nor dissatisfied gets 3 points, dissatisfied gets 2 points and highly dissatisfied 1 point. Level of satisfaction is categorized as 8 Total score 34–55: Satisfied Total score 23–33: Neutral Total Score 11–33: Dissatisfied Method of data collection : Data was collected after the approval from Institutional Review Committee (IRC) B.P Koirala Institute of Health Science Ref:nrs 75/078/079. Written permission was taken from the concerned old age homes to conduct the study. Before administration of questionnaire on respondents, informed consent was taken from the all the respondents. The purpose of study was clearly explained in Nepali language to the respondents. No any respondents were enforced for the study. Questionnaire was developed in both English and Nepali language. Data was collected by face to face interview technique using structured interview schedule in Nepali language by the researcher herself. The approximate time to fill the questionnaires was 20–30 minutes. Data analysis and statistical methods Data were analyzed using Statistical Package of Social Science (SPSS) Version 20 was used. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used. Chi square test was used at a significance level of 5% to determine the association. Ethical Consideration Ethical Approval was provided from IRC BPKIHS. Before administration of questionnaire on respondents, informed consent was taken from the all the respondents. Principle of respect for human dignity and justice was maintained. The purpose of study was clearly explained in understandable language to the respondents. No any respondents were enforced for the study. Confidentiality was maintained throughout the study. Information obtained was used only for research purpose. Life satisfaction among the elderly is still rated highly despite growing discomfort. Life satisfaction among elderly has been used as an indicator to evaluate senior citizens life conditions, reflecting multiple and broad domains. Changes in life styles, demanding jobs, a shift to nuclear family structures have led to increase neglect of the elderly by families and community. This study was carried out to assess the life satisfaction of senior citizens residing in old age homes. In this study, findings revealed that more than half of the respondents (52.1%) were satisfied with their life where as 47.9% were dissatisfied with their life which is similar to the study conducted by Lamichhane S in Kaski disrict where majority of the respondents (69%) were satisfied and 31% were dissatisfied. 5 Ageing process may affect senior citizens life satisfaction. Life satisfaction among them decreased as age increases beyond 65 years of age on a study conducted by Chen C in Taiwan on aging and life satisfaction. 7 Regarding economic status there was statistical significant association between the life satisfactions and economic status (P = 0.047) which was similar to the study conducted by Britiller MC in Philippines where overall life satisfaction was significantly associated with economic status (P = 0.018). 8 Thus it is important to evaluate and improve the health status of the senior citizens living in old age homes. The concerned old age homes should conduct programme related to the benefit of the senior citizens. CONCLUSION Based on the study findings it can be concluded that more than half of the respondents were satisfied with their life. Most of the senior citizens were satisfied with their overall life satisfaction and few were dissatisfied. There is significantly association between the Life satisfactions with the communication with family, help from friends, life comparing to others, economic status and government facilities provided to the respondents in old age homes. The purpose of the study was to find out the life satisfaction among senior citizens residing in old age homes of Devghat, Nepal.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMethods:\u003c/strong\u003e A cross sectional study design was conducted among 96 senior citizens residing in old age homes through total enumeration sampling techniques over a period of 4 weeks (4\u003csup\u003eth\u003c/sup\u003e August 2022 - 4\u003csup\u003eth\u003c/sup\u003e September 2022). Data was collected using Satisfaction with Life Scale through structured interview technique. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation. For inferential statistics chi square test was used at p=0.05 level of significance.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eResults: \u003c/strong\u003eThe study finding revealed that most of the senior citizens i.e. 52.1% were satisfied with their life. There were statistically significant association between the life satisfaction and communication with family members, help from others, life comparing to others, social activities and economic status at p value \u0026lt;0.05.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eConclusion: \u003c/strong\u003eThis study concluded that most of the senior citizens were satisfied with their overall life scale and only a few were dissatisfied.
