Occurrence of climacteric symptoms in postmenopausal women after prophylactic bilateral ovariectomy

This study analyzed quality-of-life impacts after prophylactic bilateral ovariectomy in 252 postmenopausal women, stratified by time since last menstruation (1–5 years, 5–10 years, and >10 years). Using the Kupperman Index one day before and three months after laparotomy ovariectomy performed for benign uterine diseases, the authors found climacteric symptoms increased from 17.06% preoperatively to 57.8% postoperatively. After surgery, symptom patterns differed by time since menopause: group A reported more hot flushes, sweating, nervousness, and sleep disorders; group B more sleep disorders, nervousness, and sweating; and group C more nervousness.
