The chapter describes chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS) as a common gynecologic condition characterized by chronic lower abdominal pain, citing U.S. epidemiologic estimates that up to 15% of women aged 18–50 years are affected. It summarizes the clinical and health-economic burden, including figures that 10% of ambulatory gynecology patients present for lower abdominal pain and that a subset of laparoscopies and hysterectomies are performed due to chronic pelvic pain. It emphasizes that CPPS is a prevalent problem, but the text is presented as a narrative overview rather than a new primary study, with limitations that it does not provide detailed methodological evaluation of the cited data within the chapter itself. Relevance to endometriosis: endometriosis is referenced in the included literature and related context (e.g., a controlled study of presacral neurectomy for pelvic pain associated with endometriosis is listed), though the chapter’s main focus is chronic pelvic pain syndrome as a broader clinical entity.
