Tumores musinosos del ovario. estudio clínico-patólogico

Objective: To characterize the clinical and pathological aspects of the primary mucinous ovarian tumors diagnosed in the Institute of Pathology “Dr. Jose A. O Daly” (Central University of Venezuela). Methods: 113 biopsies diagnosed as primary mucinous tumors of the ovary during the period 2000 to 2012 were selected. Results: 126 biopsies mucinous tumors of the ovary were studied over a period of 12 years. Benign lesions accounted for 79%, followed by carcinomas in 16%, and finally borderline tumors by 5%. The intestinal subtype was more frequent, 62.8%. Both histological subtypes of mucinous carcinomas were in stage I. The intestinal were mainly low-grade (64.2%), while those of type seromucinoso were high grade tumors (75%) and occurred in younger women. Intestinal type tumors showed association with: Brenner tumor in 7% and mature cystic teratoma in 7%. Seromucinosos type tumors showed association with endometriosis in 11.9%. Conclusions: As in previous research, this study establishes clinics and morphological differences between the histological subtypes of mucinous tumors. Association between mucinous tumor of intestinal type with Brenner tumor and mature cystic teratoma also was found. Tumors of seromucinoso type were associated with endometriosis. All these findings suggest a different way of tumorogenesis for the two histological subtypes of mucionus tumors with important clinical implications that require further investigations.
