Abstract
Objective To evaluate the efficacy of levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system(LNG-IUS) in the treatment of adenomyosis. Methods LNG-IUS was inserted into uterine cavity in 44 women with adenomyosis. The patients were followed up for 12 months and clinical outcomes were evaluated. Results Compared to before, the menstrual blood volume by PBAC was decreased\[(167.43±170.88) points vs.(10.25±11.87) points\](P0.05).So did the visual analogue scale(VAS)\[(80.23±29.21)points vs.(12.33±22.02)points\] and verbal rating scale (VRS)\[(1.95±1.26)points vs.(0.14±0.52)points\] scores for the severity of dysmenorrhea(P0.05).The mass of the uterus on B sonography decreased slightly. The incidence of adverse effects was 95.5% including persistent prolonged spotting in 88.6% and amenorrheic in 18%.The quality of life improved in 81.8% of the patients.A total of 40 women(90.9%) was satisfied with the treatment.ConclusionTreatment of adenomyosis with LNG-IUS is an effective conservative method without severe adverse response.
