The study investigated whether the cell adhesion molecule L1CAM (CD171) mediates invasion and nerve growth in an endometriosis model. Using a chicken ganglion assay, researchers tested effects of conditioned medium from primary endometrial epithelial cells derived from endometriosis patients and found that this medium induced neurite sprouting (though less than NGF positive control), with sprouting blocked in a dose-dependent manner by anti-L1 antibodies. In a Matrigel invasion assay with the endometriosis cell line Z12, pretreatment with anti-L1 mAb significantly reduced relative invasion compared with nonspecific IgG and untreated cells.
