The high-temperature extracted pectin (AHP, 100°C, 3 h) showed superior adsorption performance compared to low-temperature extract (LHP, 80°C, 1 h) and commercial citrus pectin (CP). Structural characterization identified that AHP possessed higher GalA content (83.32%±3.52%), the lowest DE (26.34%±1.52%), and smallest molecular weight (78.2 kDa), with simplified RG-I domains and macroporosity. These properties contrasted with those of LHP (84.68%±3.86% GalA, 29.32%±2.18% DE, bimodal Mw at 316.4 kDa and 115.7 kDa) and CP (76.83%±3.74% GalA, 83.24%±3.22% DE, 573.1 kDa). The adsorption followed Langmuir isotherm ( R 2 >0.99) and pseudo-second-order kinetics ( R 2 >0.99), with maximum capacities of 295.86 (AHP), 235.29 (LHP), 167.50 mg/g (CP). Spectroscopic and competitive adsorption analyses confirmed carboxyl groups as primarily binding sites through cation exchange, electrostatic interactions and complexation. These results suggested that sunflower head pectin, particularly AHP, showed excellent potential for heavy metal remediation, enabling simultaneous agricultural waste valorization and environmental purification while guiding optimized pectin-based adsorbents design. Spectroscopic and competitive adsorption analyses confirmed carboxyl groups as primarily binding sites through cation exchange, electrostatic interactions and complexation. These results suggested that sunflower head pectin, particularly AHP, showed excellent potential for heavy metal remediation, enabling simultaneous agricultural waste valorization and environmental purification while guiding optimized pectin-based adsorbents design.\u003c/p\u003e","manuscriptTitle":"Sunflower head-derived natural low-methoxyl pectin as an efficient biosorbent for lead removal","msid":"","msnumber":"","nonDraftVersions":[{"code":1,"date":"2025-11-13 12:57:21","doi":"10.21203/rs.3.rs-7821661/v1","editorialEvents":[{"type":"communityComments","content":0},{"type":"decision","content":"Revision requested","date":"2025-11-07T16:54:38+00:00","index":"","fulltext":""},{"type":"editorInvitedReview","content":"","date":"2025-11-07T06:46:38+00:00","index":"hide","fulltext":""},{"type":"reviewerAgreed","content":"17800139996455486617528585533569602851","date":"2025-11-06T06:40:29+00:00","index":"hide","fulltext":""},{"type":"reviewerAgreed","content":"301726213579333226735528555114163765137","date":"2025-11-05T06:59:46+00:00","index":"hide","fulltext":""},{"type":"editorInvitedReview","content":"","date":"2025-11-04T00:27:37+00:00","index":"hide","fulltext":""},{"type":"reviewerAgreed","content":"120867929502608310479230622914348278968","date":"2025-11-04T00:00:34+00:00","index":"hide","fulltext":""},{"type":"reviewersInvited","content":"","date":"2025-11-03T21:20:04+00:00","index":"","fulltext":""},{"type":"editorAssigned","content":"","date":"2025-11-03T21:16:30+00:00","index":"","fulltext":""},{"type":"editorInvited","content":"","date":"2025-11-03T16:46:59+00:00","index":"","fulltext":""},{"type":"checksComplete","content":"","date":"2025-10-20T09:27:01+00:00","index":"","fulltext":""},{"type":"submitted","content":"Scientific Reports","date":"2025-10-20T08:17:12+00:00","index":"","fulltext":""}],"status":"published","journal":{"display":true,"email":"[email protected]","identity":"scientific-reports","isNatureJournal":false,"hasQc":true,"allowDirectSubmit":false,"externalIdentity":"scirep","sideBox":"Learn more about [Scientific Reports](http://www.nature.com/srep/)","snPcode":"","submissionUrl":"","title":"Scientific Reports","twitterHandle":"","acdcEnabled":true,"dfaEnabled":true,"editorialSystem":"stoa","reportingPortfolio":"Scientific Reports","inReviewEnabled":true,"inReviewRevisionsEnabled":true}}],"origin":"","ownerIdentity":"e08859c3-cb09-4dbf-bea8-99de2ef03a34","owner":[],"postedDate":"November 13th, 2025","published":true,"recentEditorialEvents":[],"rejectedJournal":[],"revision":"","amendment":"","status":"published-in-journal","subjectAreas":[{"id":57632958,"name":"Physical sciences/Chemistry"},{"id":57632959,"name":"Earth and environmental sciences/Environmental sciences"},{"id":57632960,"name":"Biological sciences/Plant sciences"}],"tags":[],"updatedAt":"2026-03-09T16:05:00+00:00","versionOfRecord":{"articleIdentity":"rs-7821661","link":"https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-026-40672-7","journal":{"identity":"scientific-reports","isVorOnly":false,"title":"Scientific Reports"},"publishedOn":"2026-03-02 15:58:32","publishedOnDateReadable":"March 2nd, 2026"},"versionCreatedAt":"2025-11-13 12:57:21","video":"","vorDoi":"10.1038/s41598-026-40672-7","vorDoiUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-026-40672-7","workflowStages":[]},"version":"v1","identity":"rs-7821661","journalConfig":"researchsquare"},"__N_SSP":true},"page":"/article/[identity]/[[...version]]","query":{"redirect":"/article/rs-7821661","identity":"rs-7821661","version":["v1"]},"buildId":"8U1c8b4HqxoKbykW_rLl7","isFallback":false,"isExperimentalCompile":false,"dynamicIds":[84888],"gssp":true,"scriptLoader":[]}

Text is read by the "Ask this paper" AI Q&A widget below. Extraction quality varies by source — PMC NXML preserves structure cleanly, OA-HTML may include some navigation residue, and OA-PDF can have broken hyphenation. The publisher copy (via DOI) is the canonical version.

My notes (saved in your browser only)

Ask this paper AI returns verbatim quotes from the full text · source: preprint-html

Answers must be backed by verbatim quotes from this paper's full text. Hallucinated quotes are dropped automatically; if no verbatim passage answers the question, we say so. How this works
