Self-compassion and Endometriosis

article OA: green CC0

Abstract

This two-part project aims to investigate the role of self-compassion in individuals living with endometriosis. The first part of this project will examine the relationship between social-media usage and self-compassion using a cross-sectional survey design. It is predicted that there will be a negative correlation between self-compassion and social media to fulfil personal integrative and diversion needs, and a positive correlation between self-compassion and social media use to fulfil social, affective and cognitive needs. The second part of this project will assess the efficacy of brief self-compassion interventions using an experimental pre-post design with four conditions (self-compassion writing, self-compassion writing and fear of self-compassion module, writing control and true control). It is predicted that compared to controls, individuals exposed to the self-compassion invention report significantly higher levels of self-compassion and this effect would be strongest amongst individuals receiving the additional fear of self-compassion module. Participants will be 120 individuals aged 18 years or older with a self-reported diagnosis of endometriosis, recruited via Endometriosis Australia. Participation will be incentivised by the chance to win one of eight $250 gift vouchers.
