Sustainable Electrical Outfitting in Shipbuilding: A Chemical Tanker Case Study

Abstract

The electrical outfitting process has emerged as a critical phase in contemporary ship-building, influencing both construction efficiency and the vessels' long-term performance. This study examines the impact of planning, installation, and coordination of electrical systems on productivity and sustainability at shipyards, specifically on a chemical tanker project. Project records supplied information on labor hours, material management, and task sequencing, facilitating a rigorous examination of the impact of outfitting choices on quality and timelines. Particular emphasis was placed on the prompt installation of cable supports during block assembly, the systematic arrangement of cable routing, and the im-plementation of explicit registers and connection annotations. The results indicate that proactive planning of electrical outfitting, in conjunction with lean production methodol-ogies, minimizes delays, reduces rework, and enhances overall resource efficiency. These enhancements result in concrete advantages, including reduced construction durations, decreased expenses, and improved construction reliability. The study suggests that treat-ing electrical outfitting as a planned and integrated component of ship building, rather than a final phase, yields quantifiable improvements in efficiency and advances sustain-ability objectives. This illustrates a viable approach for promoting low-carbon, re-source-efficient shipbuilding methods.
