Developing an institutional publication data archive

Modern-day scientific research faces a severe crisis due to a lack of reproducibility and data availability. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in improving reproducibility and transparency in research and supporting open science. Scientific misconduct due to data integrity can lead to the wastage of up to 90% of research funding. In cases of scientific misconduct, academic institutions must have timely access to publication data to ensure thorough investigation and maintain trust in research. Thus, one effective way to improve trust, reproducibility, and accountability in scientific research is for host institutes to make the availability of raw data mandatory locally upon publication of results. In this study, we describe the process of setting up the publication data archive process at two research institutes in India. We have also discussed relevant challenges and their possible solutions. Successful implementation of a data deposition mandate requires a holistic, collaborative approach that addresses technological, cultural, and organizational challenges. The process outlined in this article will serve as an example for other institutions to establish an in situ or local publication data deposition process, thereby improving the transparency and reproducibility of scientific research.
