Fisher’s Statistical Methods for Research Workers: 100 Year Anniversary

2025 marks the 100th anniversary of Sir Ronald Fisher’s Statistical Methods for Research Workers (SMRW, 1925). This arguably is the most influential statistics book written in the last 100 years. Although it introduced researchers to statistical methods for many problems, biologists, psychologists, and medical researchers found his analysis of variance for experiments and related inferential methods for correlational research especially relevant. This article presents a brief history of the analysis of variance, inference for correlational problems, statistical controversies with Karl Pearson, and final comments on Fisher’s accomplishments.
