El termino endometriosis se refiere a la presencia de endometrio fuera de la cavidad endometrial. Los lugares afectados con mayor frecuencia por este proceso con los ovarios y la porcion inferior del peritoneo pelviano; no obstante, tambien se pueden afectar otras superficies peritoneales, estructuras y organos extraperitoneales, como los ganglios lifaticos pelvicos y abdominales, la cavidad pleural, el rinon y las heridas quirurgicas.
