Abstract

Objective: To investigate the pathologic features, pathogenesis, diagnosis and outcome of Abdominal wall endometriosis. Methods: Clinical and pathological features of 56 cases with abdominal wall endometriosis(AWE) were analysed and literatures were reviewed. Results: The most common manifestation of AWE is the development of tender nodule(s) or mass(es) with periodic pain accompanied by menstruation. In pathology,AWE is characterized by glands with endometrium in the mass, which are surrounded by ununiform stroma and hemosiderin-laden macrophages;some patients were diagnosed with the help of CD10(+) endometrial stroma. The lesions were all surgically removed in these 56 cases with clinical symptoms disappeared. The patients were followed up for 1 to 3 years without recurrence or malignant transformation. Conclusions: AWE is a common type of tumor-like lesion that needs pathologic evaluation. It can be diagnosed readily based on medical history and typical clinical manifestations.Surgical treatment is effective without obvious recurrence or malignant transformation.
