This paper is a drug review of the Siddha herbo-mineral formulation Gunma kudori mezhugu, traditionally used for Dhoora soolai (dysmenorrhoea), focusing on the different activities of its ingredients. It describes dysmenorrhoea in Siddha terms as vitiation and blockage related to reproductive channels, and contrasts primary dysmenorrhoea with prostaglandin-associated mechanisms versus secondary dysmenorrhoea linked to pelvic conditions such as endometriosis, adenomyosis, and fibroids. Across the reviewed ingredient information, the authors report pharmacological common activities for the formulation including anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-emetic effects, while the explicit limitation is that it is a narrative review rather than new experimental or clinical evaluation of the formulation itself. Relevance to endometriosis: the paper discusses dysmenorrhoea etiologies and explicitly states that secondary dysmenorrhoea can be associated with endometriosis and adenomyosis, though the paper’s main focus is reviewing ingredient activities of Gunma kudori mezhugu rather than studying those conditions directly.

Abstract

Siddha system of medicine uses herbal and herbo-mineral formulations in therapeutics since immemorial. The phytochemical and pharmacological activity of Siddha herbo-mineral formulation Gunma kudori mezhugu being used for soolai diseases especially for Dhoora soolai. (Dysmenorrhoea). It is a pathological condition described in Siddha medicine, primarily related to menstrual disorders in females. It refers to painful menstruation of sufficient magnitude so as to incapacitate day to day activities, often accompanied by symptoms such as lower abdominal pain, discomfort and systemic disturbances like nausea, vomiting, fatigue, diarrhoea, headache, tachycardia. Primary dysmenorrhea is associated with increase in prostaglandins (PGF2α & PGE2). While secondary dysmenorrhea is associated with underlying pelvic conditions such as endometriosis, adenomyosis and fibroids. In Siddha the condition is understood as vitiation if vatham, maelnokkukaal and keezhnokkukaal leading to blockage of the reproductive channels. The present review was carried to describe different activities of each ingredient of Gunma kudori mezhugu. It is one of the safe and efficacious medicines used traditionally for the treatment of Dhooora soolai. The review describes various facts like active constituents, pharmacological actions of the individual ingredients. The pharmacological common activity of Gunma kudori mezhugu showed anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory, anti-emetic activity.
