Abstract
Introduction: Asherman's syndrome is defined by the presence of endometrial adhesions or adhesions in the endometrium with a consequent risk of hypomenorrhea/amenorrhea, reduced fertility, failed pregnancies, and abnormal placentation. However, AS can develop even in cases of infection or surgery involving the uterus (myomectomy and hysteroscopic surgery). The syndrome is characterized by loss of functional endometrium in the uterine cavity occupied by scar tissue, recurrent pregnancy loss or infertility, and obstetric issues such as abnormal placentation (premature or placental abruption). Several studies have focused on stem cell therapy to treat damaged endometrium. The regenerative capacity of stem cells has shown improved outcomes in terms of fertility and fibrosis in people with AS, thus, stem cells have the potential to replace damaged cells in the endometrium.
\nAim: The purpose of the literature review is to investigate the effectiveness of stem cell therapy in women who cannot conceive because they have Asherman's syndrome.
\nMaterial and Method: The method used was the search of English literature in the CINAHL and PubMed databases where the same keywords stem cell therapy, asherman syndrome, Intrauterine Synechiae were used in all possible combinations and the word AND between them.
\nResults: The search resulted in 7 studies, during the period 2014-2021, that met the predefined criteria. Through the search of the literature, it was found that stem cell therapy is an alternative treatment for reducing infertility in patients with Asherman Syndrome. The results suggest that stem cell therapy in combination with hormone therapy shows improvement in menstrual flow and volume, pregnancy outcome, endometrial thickness, and reduction of uterine adhesions as well as recovery of a functional endometrium.
\nConclusions: This review reviewed and synthesized the results of stem cell therapy in the treatment of Asherman syndrome. Stem cell therapy among others is favorable in improving the uterine cavity so that fertilization can take place. However, more studies with larger samples are needed to establish more solid evidence for the administration of stem cell therapy in patients with Asherman's syndrome.
