Abstract
ABSTRACT: Endometriosis is a benign gynecological disease characterized by the presence and
growth of functional endometrial tissue outside the uterus, which affects women of
reproductive age. Endometriosis brings a high degree of social limitation in the
patients affected. This disease was first described by Friedrich von Recklinghausen
in 1893, but despite the time it was first described, the mechanisms of its
pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment have not yet reached consensus in the
scientific community. To do so, a continuous review of knowledge about the disease
is necessary. A review on the literature on the disease, on the central scientific data
banks, sought to compile the latest information about the disease. The results
corroborate a clinical and social picture of the disease. But new studies and
therapeutic protocols are needed, as well as their ongoing updating.
