Abstract
This chapter begins with a description of the hypothesis-testing approach to clinical work of which the case formulation is a part. We discuss the role of the case formulation in treatment and review evidence that the formulation contributes to the effectiveness of treatment. We also describe the elements of the cognitive-behavioral (CB) case formulation and present a case to illustrate the process of developing a formulation and using it to guide treatment.
