Abstract

As a woman, living with chronic disease endometriosis means living with severe pain in daily life. The purpose of this study was to describe how the endometriosis related pain affected the woman's daily life. Twelve scientific articles were analyzed using a qualitative content analysis with manifest approach which resulted in four final categories. Be treated with distrust of care; Feelings of fatigue and depression; Need to adapt the work by the possibility of recovery; Prevents a sexual intimacy, love relationships and pregnancy. The results showed that the pain caused emotional and physical fatigue, depression and a change of identity. Furthermore, the pain could prevent or minimize work and education and a long recovery time required often after work. The pain was a major obstacle for women to have sexual intercourse which had a negative impact on the love relationship and pregnancy. Women's subjective experience of their pain was normalized by the nursing staff, resulting in delayed diagnosis and thus an unnecessary suffering. With a greater understanding and knowledge of how a woman's daily lives are affected by endometriosis related pain, the nurse may help women to experience health by providing the space and opportunity to talk about the thoughts and feelings the disease causes.
