The method consists of three subtests: stamping on a force plate, hitting a punching bag, and shouting into a microphone. Method A clinical group of female patients with eating disorders (n = 51) were asked to perform the test and to complete a questionnaire on anger coping. Outcomes were compared to previous test results in a control group of female students (n = 56). Results The main research question was: are there associations between anger coping and force production in the clinical group, compared to the control group? The first finding was that patients show lower force production levels than controls on the Stamp and Shout subtests, but higher levels on the Strike subtest, controlled for weight. Moderate associations are found between force production parameters and anger coping styles, yielding a pattern of differences between anger inhibition and control on the one hand and anger expression on the other hand. Overall, the Shout subtest was found to be the most sensitive indicator for anger coping style. The secondary question was: is there a difference in anger coping between patients and controls? Patients scored significantly higher on self-reported anger inhibition than controls. The results confirm the excessive anger inhibition reported in previous research on eating disorders, including our PMT intervention studies. Conclusion The psychomotor task of the MSSS elicits additional insights in the anger-performance relationship that otherwise may remain internalized. Particularly voice expression deserves a more central role in improving anger coping skills.
