A survey of 450 graduate students assessed supervisor conscientiousness, perceived supervisor–student relationship quality, professional identity, and extroversion, and a moderated mediation model was tested using regression-based analyses. Results showed that supervisor conscientiousness was positively associated with graduate students’ professional identity. Perceived supervisor–student relationship quality mediated this association. In addition, student extroversion moderated the link between supervisor conscientiousness and perceived relationship quality, with the positive association being stronger among students low in extroversion. These findings underscore the potential relevance of supervisor conscientiousness and perceived supervisor–student relationship quality to graduate students’ professional identity, and indicate that less extroverted students may perceive lower relationship quality when paired with less conscientious supervisors.
