Abstract

Progestational agents are being used with increasing frequency in disorders such as endometriosis, severe dysmenorrhea, disseminated endometrial carcinoma, mastodynia, etc. It is important to know their structure, laboratory evaluation and clinical effects in order to select the proper one. The author explains and illustrates the chemical structure of five synthetic steroids with progestational activity, summarizes their laboratory assays, and discusses the indications for their use and effective dosage schedules in various clinical entities.
